He is an architect born in Milan in 1931. He has directed the magazines Casabella, Modo and Domus. Monographs in various languages have been published on his work and the work he produced for the Alchimia Studio.
He produces objects, furniture, environments, paintings, installations, architecture. He works with international companies such as Alessi, Philips, Cartier, Swatch, Hermés and is also a consultant to various industries in the Far East on issues of image and design.
He is an honorary member of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design of Jerusalem. In 1979 and 1981 he was awarded the Compasso d'Oro for design. In France he is Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres and has been decorated by the Architectural League of New York.
He was Professor of Design at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunstin in Vienna. His works may be found in various museums and private collections.
In 1989 he opened Atelier Mendini with his brother Francesco in Milan, designing Fabbriche Alessi in Omegna, the new Olympic swimming pool in Trieste, some subway stations and the restoration of the Villa Comunale in Naples, a tower in Hiroshima in Japan, the Museum of Groningen in Holland, a neighborhood of Lugano in Switzerland, the Madsack office building in Hanover, a trade building in Lörrach, Germany and other buildings in Europe and the United States.
