Born in Osaka, he began his career as an interior and exterior industrial designer in Japan, moving to Milan in 1969. He has created numerous successful products for Italian, German, and Japanese companies. He was awarded numerous prestigious prizes, such as the Japan Interior Designers Association Award (1975), the American Product Design Award (1983), and the Mainichi Design Award (1985). Many of his works have been chosen for the permanent collections of important international museums such as the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Centre George Pompidou in Paris and the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg. He has exhibited his work in Barcelona, Vienna, Helsinki, Milan, Singapore, Frankfurt, and elsewhere. He has published Movement As Concept (1990) and Washi and Urushi Reinterpretation of Tradition (1999).
